What is the Genesis of Simple Deeds Foundation (SDF)?
Often, we have been asked this question, and here is our short response.
A few recurring events in the life of an entrepreneur and HR Consultant, lead to the formation of Simple Deeds Foundation.
Recruitment Interview Disasters:
In a work-experience spanning almost two decades, we came across innumerable instances of dismal interviewee performance during job interviews where applicants often appeared without a resume or with a very poorly written resume, or an application copied from the net or written by some friend or relative. Many would not even know what was written in their application letter! A widely reappearing theme during interviews was lack of both written and spoken communication skills, body language that reflected nervousness or even arrogance, inadequate awareness of etiquette needed to attend a job-interview, irrelevant answers to interviewer's questions, etc.
Inadequate Awareness of Socio - Emotional Intelligence Skills in employees
This was not a very uncommon experience during our interactions with companies across sectors. We conducted various soft skills training sessions across a wide range of industries and felt the lack of interest in many participants in learning any new skill or even accepting the need to assess one's behavior pattern.
This led us to think about catching them young; hence we introduced Campus to Corporate Workshop for university students. We implemented these at many universities. In this case too, we experienced that senior students were not keen to learn socio-emotional skills.
This motivated us to reach out to students at a much younger age, and we started The Edu club, a Centre of Education for school students. Fortunately, or unfortunately, at our center we came across many students from RTE (Right to Education) quota, who could bot read or write even in grade 5. We helped many such students for a year or two, till they became proficient in reading, writing and speaking. Once most of our students learnt these basic learning skills, they started performing very well at their school and were far more confident too.
This prompted us to reach out to more such students and we started teaching street school students, followed by students from government and low fees schools. To formalize and expand our reach, we founded our NGO Simple Deeds Foundation in Nov 2019
In subsequent blogs, will share more about our enriching and soul-satisfying journey.
